Cinnamon Raisin (vegan): This bread was dense (but moist), and absolutely packed with huge, delectable raisins. It is full of bold, flavorful ingredients (such as whole wheat flour, sunflower seeds, cinnamon, molasses and evaporated cane juice- all of which are organic) that blend well together to create a uniform taste that isn't overpowering with the combination of flavors balancing quite nicely. I enjoyed my cinnamon raisin bread toasted with a little bit of Earth Balance which made it easy to savor the sweet ans salty flavors of the bread. Next time I think will try this bread out with an eggless French toast recipe, yum!
Country Morning White (vegan): Many store bought vegan white breads are either too dense or too dry, luckily, this bread has neither of those common problems. This bread is particularly nice because its neither too light nor too heavy, and soft and moist at that! Toasted, it has just the right amount of crunch and doesn't become too dried out. The bread has a classic white bread flavor, but is much healthier and and cleaner tasting than the vast majority of conventional breads. This bread is sure to please even the pickiest eater! I loved mine toasted with some Earth Balance and crushed garlic.
Spelt Ancient Grain Bread (vegan): I expected this to be a dense, dry bread but it was quite the opposite. The bread was airy, light and moist and wonderful for sandwiches. When I toasted it, it didn't become to dry and crusty but instead remained soft and airy with a crispy, lightly browned surface... impressive! The flavor was mild and slightly nutty due to light sprinkling of sunflower and sesame seeds. The taste is milder than whole wheat and overall very pleasant. As Rudi's puts it: "As wheat’s distant cousin, spelt tends to go down a little easier but is still full of nutrients and taste." This is my new favorite bread! I enjoyed my Spelt Ancient Grain bread with some sliced Italian Field Roast sausages, tomatoes and lettuce.
Honey Sweet Whole Wheat (non-vegan): Of the 4 loaves of bread I was sent, this was the only non-vegan variety. I served these with a some freshly boiled, diced tomatoes with herbs. From what I gathered, the bread is light and has a bright and clean whole wheat flavor. The bread, like the other selections, isn't dry, too heavy, or too light and toasts perfectly.
The only potential downside to Rudi's breads is that, like nearly all store bought breads, they are a bit high in sodium (about 7-9% of your daily recommended value per slice), so please keep that in mind if you are on a low sodium diet. Overall, Rudi's Organic Bakery creates some great, tasty breads I, and others in my household, will certainly be enjoying for years to come. The breads are very "kid friendly", yet wholesome, which I'm sure all you mothers out there can appreciate!
Rudi's breads can be found at many natural food store retailers & independent grocers. Click here for a store locator.
