Review : Late July Organic Mini Bite Size Sandwich Cookies

Awesome organic snack company Late July generously provided me up with a wonderful sampling of their great snacks to review here on the blog! The selection I was sent included their cute new mini sandwich cookies which each feature adorable imprints of an endangered animals on their surface. The animals feature include: Leatherback Sea Turtles, Red Wolves, Chimpanzees, Sumatran Rhinos, Pygmy Rabbits, Black-footed Ferrets and Giant Pandas. However, the imprints of endangered animals aren't just for cuteness points... 10% of profits from the sale of these cookies will be donated to the Jane Goodall Institute! The Jane Goodall institute supports not only wildlife through conservation efforts, but provides environmental and humanitarian education to youth. It's great that by purchasing of these cookies, both consumers and Late July are giving something back.

The mini sandwich cookies come in two flavors: Milk Chocolate Between Vanilla Cookies and White Chocolate Between Chocolate Cookies. I gave both flavors to a family member who I shall dub "Picky Eater" for the purposes of this review because, well.. this is a very picky eater. Despite of the pickiness, Picky Eater really liked these... whew! * Wipes sweat from brow*.

The cookies have a great, fresh taste that is supported by a nice, generous cookie crunch. The milk chocolate filling + vanilla cookies were the clear favorite because both the chocolate filling and vanilla cookies each imparted a wonderful, distinct flavor to the overall sandwich cookie. The white chocolate filling + chocolate cookies had less distinctly separate flavors with the white chocolate filling and the chocolate cookie flavors blending together more smoothly. In contributing to the overall flavor, the taste of the white chocolate filling was less distinct than that of the chocolate filling, but both varieties tasted and looked great.

Some of the other products that were sampled by "Picky Eater" included:
  • Cheddar Cheese Sandwich Crackers & Mini Cheddar Cheese Sandwich Crackers: These consist of delicious crispy, buttery tasting crackers with a layer of real organic white cheddar sandwiched in between. The flavor is cleaner than conventional sandwich cookies and even look cleaner with their pretty, lightly colored cheese filling (aka not bright orange). This was Picky Eater's favorite Late July snack & Picky Eater wants some more!
  • Cheddar Cheese Bite Size Crackers: Picky Eater thought these were just "okay". Overall Picky Eater found the taste to be a little too mild. This is probably because these cheese crackers have a lower sodium content than the other cheese cracker brands that Picky Eater is used to. Another family member who I shall dub "Eater of Mature Taste" (no, not me!) actually really liked these. Eater of Mature Taste loved that these weren't as salty as other cheese crackers: this made the cheese flavor more distinct than in other brands. Eater of Mature Taste polished off Picky Eater's bag of these crackers with no hesitation and loved them!
Vegan options:
  • Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers: These were wonderful! The crackers were lightly sprinkled with coarse granules of salt which imparted a nice texture and flavor. The crackers had a buttery flavor) though they contain no dairy) and a light, crispy texture. The peanut butter was smooth and creamy and had an excellent lightly roasted flavor. I loved these because they weren't rich and overly creamy, but tasted very light and delicate. My personal favorite of the bunch. I liked these so much that I didn't even share with Picky Eater, though undoubtedly Picky Eater would have loved these too! These are something I would definitely purchase again.
  • Dark Chocolate (Intense And Decadent) Sandwich Cookies: These sandwich cookies had a deep, wonderful cocoa flavor. The over chocolate flavor was sweet, deep and slightly complex (with just a tinge of bitter from the cocoa). Both the cookies and the cream filling had a similar "intense" chocolate flavor, but the texture of each of the components were polar opposites, providing a great sandwich cookie experience. I loved how crispy the cookies were (more dense than other brands of sandwich cookies) and how creamy the filling was, really nice!
  • Vanilla Bean With Green Tea Sandwich Cookies: I'm a big green tea fan and even if you aren't, the flavor of these cookies won't be a problem. The green tea flavor is very mild (described as a "hint of sweet organic green tea") and isn't as prevalent as in something as say, green tea ice cream. In fact, if I didn't know there was green tea in here, I might have not even suspected that it was an ingredient. The main flavor of the filling comes from the vanilla which is sweet and pure tasting, while the green tea adds a nice, subtle dimension and complexity. Eater of Mature Taste sampled these as well and really liked them. These would be really nice to serve to guests with some coffee or tea.
All of Late July's products are free of trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives. So the next time you're tempted to grab a snack from the supermarket, think about the ingredients that go into them and opt for something like Late July. These are excellent snacks and if I could sum them up in just one word I would say they are classy. The taste of the product is clean and fresh and will appeal to young and old alike, the ingredients are of high quality and... well, they even look classy!
**I was provided with samples of the products mentioned in this review from Late July for review purposes and allowed to post my thoughts at my discretion. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. All opinions expressed here are mine.**

5 Must-have Fashionable Pieces to Pack for Every Weekend Trip

When taking weekend trips I love keeping things simple. Lots of basics that can be mixed and matched so that you worry less about matching clothing and more about enjoying your vacation time. Here are 5 fashionable, yet simple, must haves for a weekend trips:

1. A cute light jacket.

Whenever I go on vacation I always pack either a black or heather hoodie with me. Two simple colors that will match just about any other color or pattern. It doesn't hurt that hoodies these days aren't huge, bulky and unflattering, but lightweight with great cuts and designs.

2. Oversized shirt or tunic.

I'm a huge fan of the oversized shirt and granted, this might not be uber fashionable, but when it works, it works. Oversized shirts (and tunics) pair nicely with other basics, are comfortable to wear and can double as a dress if necessary. Plus they can be worn in tons of ways: off the shoulder, with or without a belt, etc. My pick: your favorite band tee.

3. Comfortable, but fashionable shoes.

You will probably be walking a bit during your weekend trip, so bring along a pair of shoes that are adequate for walking and that look nice. This way you won't have to pack multiple pairs of shoes. My pick: a simple flat boot.

4. A single simple accessory... or two.

The great thing about weekend trips is that you'd don't necessarily need to pack light. On the flip side, also don't overdo things. Spruce up your weekend outfit by bringing along a single fashionable brooch, necklace, pin, bangle, scarf or other accessory. Keep things simple and classy!

5. A pair of comfortable pants.

Okay, so maybe these don't have to be fashionable, but it sure is a lot more fun when they are! Weekend trips often mean a bit of driving, so if your drive is going to be more than a few hours long its always nice to have a comfy pair of pants with you! A pair of yoga pants, gym shorts, wide leg velour pants or even leggings will do the trick.

Twittermoms and Gap Outlet have teamed up to help bring you tips on what to pack for your upcoming Memorial Weekend vacation. Bloggers were asked to post 5 must have fashion pieces for weekend trips. To participate in this program or discussion be sure to visit the Twittermoms post here:

That Day

While making my last post I discovered that Lali Puna has a new(ish) video out for their song "That Day". The animation (and the song itself) is really cute!

Music Monday : Together in Electric Dreams

Lali Puna's cover of Philip Oakey (Human League) & Giorgio Moroder's "Together In Electric Dreams" is probably my favorite modern interpretation of a very 80s song.

Today's Dinner : General Tao's Tofu (from Vegweb)

General Tao's Tofu is probably one of the most non-tofu-lover friendly tofu dishes out there. That is to say, even if you don't like tofu or have had some bad experiences with it in the past, chances are you will actually enjoy this dish. Everyone in my household loves it and just check out the 33 pages of rave reviews on the recipe listing!

Even if you're positive you will hate this dish because of the tofu, you might try preparing just the sauce to toss with some veggies. The sauce is great and requires only garlic, ginger, veggie broth, sugar, vinegar, soy sauce and cornstarch.

I've made this at least a dozen times but tonight I thought I'd take a picture of a "mini bowl" of the dish with some brown rice to share with you!

Review and Giveaway : Street Boners: 1,764 Hipster Fashion Jokes by Gavin McInnes (ends 6/6/2010)

Okay, I'll admit it, in my more youthful and "way too much time on my hands" days I would sit in front of my computer and occasionally check out the Vice Dos and Don't (some content may be NSFW)... and, you know, I might have found some of the commentary slightly entertaining (not necessarily funny) . That was at the height of the nu-rave era and now that those times are gone, maybe I just don't "get it" anymore. Not that I was ever nu-rave (I wasn't).

"Fifteen years after founding Vice, Gavin McInnes has poured his creative juices into a new endeavor: StreetCarnage.com. Growing in size and influence at an alarming rate, the site's main feature is the new and improved version of Gavin's "DOs and DON'Ts," now tantalizingly called Street Boners.

These Boners have been polished and compounded into a book that takes the best of the site and adds hundreds more gems! With 1,312 photos, hilarious captions, and a harsh new rating system-from one to 10 kitten faces-STREET BONERS makes sure no glorious fashion statement goes unnoticed. Innocent citizens are either damned to hell or relentlessly exalted into heaven. Chloe Sevigny, Debbie Harry, Fred Armisen, and Tim & Eric also contribute their scathing wit to the book, and the end result is a New York fashion bible no bathroom should be without."

I found Street Boners: 1,764 Hipster Fashion Jokes sort of confusing. On one hand this book totes itself as a street fashion bible ala FRUiTS but here's the problem with that: the photographs in this book aren't good enough to justify that title. Many of the photographs are overexposed, amateur (and not in a pseudo-artsy way), slight grainy, and quite tiny. In fact, some of the "joke" captions that went along with the images were sort of hard to understand at first because the photographs were too small to immediately figure out what was even going on.

Thus, this book might be exactly what it claims to be, a book full of hipster jokes. A large percentage of the "jokes" seem to convey a desire of the author to maintain an ounce of indie credibility and "punkness" while embracing trust fund kid apologetics and famous hipster pandering. This makes the commentary both sad and funny in a "Oh Mr. McInnes, we're laughing at you, not with you" sort of way. But that is the ultimate ironic point after all, McInnes knows we're laughing at him, and he likes it. He likes it a lot. So much that he built an empire out of it... and then wrote a book.

What I do like about this book is that whether it is or isn't a fashion bible or even a book of jokes, it's unabashedly a tribute to the times. It's a tribute to the trash talking, anonymity of the internet era. The commentary in this book is the same type of commentary people are posting online behind other people's backs or saying with a cupped hand to a friend's ear. It's the same commentary that we're all LOLing at as we post online but then claim to find totally unfunny in real life as we shake our heads in disgust.

Fun Family Vacation Activities Your Kids Will Love

A large number of my favorite memories from my childhood came from family vacations. Based on what I loved as a kid, here are 5 kid friendly vacation activity suggestions for all you parents out there:

1. Go camping and hiking.

I loved going camping trips with my family. Even participating in setting up the camp site was a ton of fun (helping set up the tent, gathering wood for a campfire, etc.)- something that would probably be a totally different story now that I'm older. Going hiking while on vacation was also a highlight. When I was a kid my parents took us on frequent hikes around our local area, but it was always much more fun to go on hikes while on vacation and explore new territories. Even taking treks around the camp ground was super exciting!

2. Check out some museums.

Maybe I'm just a huge nerd but I loved going to natural history museums as a kid. The dioramas of huge, dead, stuffed animals always sent chills down my spine... in the best way possible. I don't think I actually learned much from going to museums as a kid (sorry mom and dad), but I remember almost all the museums I went to pretty distinctly and with a lot of fondness. Tip: Check for free admission days or times on museum websites in advance, many museums offer free admission days/hours weekly or monthly.

3. Visit some community parks.

This is something I don't remember doing while vacationing during my youth, but it's definitely something I wish I experienced more of as a kid. Whenever I go on vacation now (even if I'm alone) I like to check out some o the community parks. Its a great spot to people watch & get to know the area you're visiting. Also perfect for picnics! Kids will enjoy the new scenery and play equipment and who knows, they might even make some new friends for life!

4. Regional snacking.

I guess this outs me as a total glutton, but I think enjoying regional snacks are a must! For example, you can't come out West and NOT have some In N Out. Anywhere you go there are some unique foods and snacks to sample. Even if it's just fast food (which I don't usually endorse). I still often crave some of the foods I ate while on vacation as a kid and that haven't had since I was just a kid!

5. Skip the tech... except the cameras.

Cell phones, video games, iPods.. these are all vacation no-nos. These days technology is always at hand, and everyone always wants to be hooked up. Kids being no exception of course. Rather than distracting tech products, perhaps allow your children to have their own camera to take pictures of what they see while vacation, this will help kids focus more on their surroundings rather than on a screen.

Green Metallic Bunnies!

When I saw this green metallic bunny on the Paul Smith website, I think I got way more excited than could be considered normal. Anyone who has been following this blog for some time probably knows by now that I'm abnormally obsessed with these rather nondescript ceramic bunnies.

The green metallic is definitely one of my favorite colorways as of yet. Will I finally pick one of these up? Well, that has yet to be determined. But until then... Paul Smith, moar bunnayz plz!
